Events in San Diego

We’ve all probably spent more time in our homes throughout this last year than we ever have before. With the covid restrictions starting to lift in California, and as more and more people are getting the vaccine, it’s beginning to look like we might actually have a summer coming up where we can all get out of the house!

As you look forward to all of the warm and sunny days ahead, here are a few upcoming activities in San Diego that you can add to your calendar. All of these events take place outdoors, so it’ll be covid-safe fun for you and your family.

Farmer’s markets

The majority of the produce in San Diego County is grown on small family farms, and one of the best ways to support your community is by buying local. It’s a great way to spend the day and can be a fun food-filled event for the whole family. There are farmer’s markets in just about every neighborhood in San Diego so you’re sure to find one close by. Some of the most popular farmer’s market neighborhoods include Carlsbad, Coronado, Little Italy, Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Ocean Beach, North Park, and many more. All of the locations and dates can be found on the San Diego Farm Bureau website.

Art Alive exhibit

This June, the San Diego Museum of Art is hosting the 40th annual Art Alive exhibit with a newly imagined floral experience. This open-air floral affair is open to both museum members and non-members and is family friendly. With the beautiful colors, scents, and breathtaking floral art pieces, this exhibit is unlike anything you’ve seen before. Grab your tickets soon if you’re interested because this is likely to fill up due to the limited space this year. Find out more from the San Diego Museum of Art website.

Walk in A.R.T

On the first Thursday of the month, starting in April, the Hillcrest neighborhood is hosting the Walk in A.R.T. (Allyship, Resilience, and Truth) celebration. In Hillcrest’s mural alley area, the event will feature live music, performance art, food, and drinks and starts at 5pm going until 11pm. This event is more on the low-key side and can be enjoyed casually. See more details on their event page: Walk in A.R.T.

SoCal Etsy Guild Market

If you’re someone who loves handmade items or are looking for a gift, you’re definitely going to want to check out the SoCal Etsy Guild. In Mission Valley on the first Saturday of the month starting in May, you will find local artisans and craftsmen selling their unique items. This event features everything from art, design, vintage, and pre-packed food and is completely free. Find out more information from the Westfield website.

San Diego Fair

It’s finally almost fair time again! We had to miss out last year because of covid and the stay-at-home order, but we’re in luck this year — the fair is coming back and will be here from June 11th to July 4th. The fair will feature all of your favorite things, everything from food & agriculture, arts & talent, to business & innovation — there’s going to be something for everyone.

It will be slightly smaller scale than in years past and attendees will need to stay 6 feet apart while wearing masks, but it’ll have the classic attractions including the Ferris Wheel and Carousel. Due to the limited ticket sales this year, you may want to grab yours sooner rather than later — see the San Diego Fair website to learn more.

Miramar air show

One of the many great things about living in San Diego is our close proximity to the Miramar Air Force Base and getting to see the Blue Angels fly overhead. In 2020, they resorted to hosting a virtual show, but there’s nothing that compares to seeing this amazing sight in person. This September, the show is coming back to San Diego and the aerial acrobatics will be better than ever. It’ll feature the Blue Angels, the Golden Knights, the U.S. Navy Leap Frogs, and many more. If you’re interested, you can find more information from the MCAS Miramar website.

Live at the L’Auberge

If you’re looking for a mellow night out and enjoy live music, you might want to head over to the L’Auberge Del Mar to catch an acoustic show. On most Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, there are live performances on the pacific terrace where you can take in the view, listen to the music, and grab a bite to eat. Their calendar is kept up to date and you can check out their upcoming shows.

Japanese Friendship Garden summer camp

A kid-favorite summer camp is coming back to San Diego this summer — the Japanese Friendship Garden at Balboa Park will be hosting kids from June to July. For grades 1 through 8, there is something for everyone. The kids will explore the art of Bonsai, yoga, planting, composting, mixed martial arts, survival workshops, and much more. With limited capacity this year, you can reserve your kids’ space on the JFG summer camp website.
